Imagine a beautiful warm sunny day in mid-November with almost all of Long Island’s municipal shelters and established bully breed rescuers and trainers coming together to promote the bully breeds, especially the pit bull, and the great dogs they are. All shelters on Long Island have too many pit bulls and there are so many misconceptions about this breed that have been drilled into us by the media about their inherent viciousness. We all need to come together and develop strategies to handle the problem at hand.
We had 16 groups and shelters come to the LAST HOPE WANTAGH CAT AND DOG ADOPTION CENTER yesterday—we had over a 100 pitbulls attend and the afternoon could not have been more exciting than when Tia Torres of Animal Planet’s Pitbulls & Parolees whisked 6 pitbulls out of the Town of Hempstead to a refuge and training facility in New Orleans. These were 6 fighting dogs rescued from a horrible situation in Elmont—some had their teeth drilled down so they had no defenses. They are on their way to a new life.
Thank you to our volunteers, especially Joanne Anderson, for executing this wonderful event, to the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter staff, especially Cindy Iacopella, the new shelter director and Wendy Cariello, Rescue Coordinator, and everyone who came and brought their exemplary pits for adoption or adopted. Thank you to DJ James and Chico for being the model for our Bully Breed Brigade T-shirt. It was a great day for everyone. A word of gratitude to Tia Torres for attending and shaking hands with everyone and giving out autographs to anyone who wanted one. We appreciate your support beyond words. It was a day to remember!!
