Rusty – ADOPTED!!

Rusty9What’s the old saying? “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure?”

“Rusty” is such a treasure. This 2 year old handsome, purebred Doberman Pinscher with a docked tail but natural ears came to Last Hope in Wantagh on a transport from West Virginia. He was surrendered to the local rescue by a family who didn’t want him any more, even though they were keeping his son from an oops litter with the neighbor’s Boxer*. They said they didn’t have time for “Rusty” and couldn’t afford to feed him so they had him living outside. They gave him cat food and table scraps. He was filled with parasites when rescued, and weighed 67 pounds. He could afford to gain a few more. Just a few.

Meanwhile, “Rusty” had been raised with their four daughters all under 8. He was great with the kids in the videos sent by the rescue. “Rusty” is extremely loving. He prances on the leash like a show dog, and is housebroken. He gives kisses to everyone he meets. He’s a bit of a Velcro dog and attaches himself to new friends right away. “Rusty” is very smart, and learns quickly when given correction by a savvy dog leader.

Right after his neuter in West Virginia, “Rusty” was fostered for 2 weeks by a WV vet tech while waiting for transport. The vet tech did a lot of evaluation and training in the short time “Rusty” was at his home. Our boy made tremendous progress. He meshed well with his male dog around the same size, and tried to play with his Maine Coon cat (not interested). He learned some commands and responded to hand signals.

006With one correction for being possessive while on the couch, “Rusty” was given the “no furniture rule” and abided by this regulation. By the time he left, the two dogs were lying side by side chomping on their knuckle bones. He also seemed to attach himself to his new canine sibling, so poor “Rusty” is craving someone to love.

He did well with having an open crate as a refuge to seek inside. We would love to see “Rusty go to a breed experienced or dog-savvy person/family who will cherish him for the wonderful dog he is.

“Rusty” has tremendous potential for obedience or perhaps agility. We would LOVE to see Mr. Treasure realize that potential in a very, appreciative home. Call 631-671-2588 for more information.

* The WV rescue is neutering the family’s remaining pets, and monitoring the situation there.
