Shorty – ADOPTED!

Some dogs have more of their share of bad luck, but Shorty’s luck is about to change- now that she is at Last Hope.

First of all, Shorty was given a name by her former owners that makes everyone mistake her for a boy. Shorty is a  very outgoing, female Heinz 57 mix…possibly a Shepherd/Lab/Cattle Dog with a dash of Pit. She presently tips the scales at 49 lbs. She could stand to drop a few pounds.

Until she was about a year and a half old, poor Shorty was chained to a doghouse in a Wheatley Heights yard. Her owners bred Yorkie puppies inside the house, and Shorty seems to be in tune and sympathetic to tiny dogs.

In July 2011 her owners were evicted. The Yorkie puppies were stacked up in dirty crates in the yard. Babylon Shelter was called to the scene. The family assured the shelter that they were taking the puppies. Then a man pointed to Shorty and said: “You can take that one.”

Poor Shorty spent 13 months at Babylon Shelter, and despite being a favorite of the staff because she is so outgoing and happy, she had no home prospects except for a young man who applied to adopt her in April and then never returned because his mother had a serious car accident. Poor Shorty couldn’t catch a break.

Finally in August 2012 Last Hope had room for Miss Shorty, but 2 heartworm tests turned up positive. (If you recall, she lived outdoors on a chain.) She has had her first heartworm treatment, and is soaking up all the attention from our Last Hope volunteers while she waits for her second treatment in October, and, of course, for the forever home she so dearly deserves.
