Poor PEE WEE.
Our tiny Chihuahua tested heartworm positive at the vet clinic this week.
He is one of our 4 new Chis from a hoarder in South Carolina. They are between 2 to 4 years old but had never seen a veterinarian until coming to Last Hope.
PEE WEE is 3, and the only one of the quartet to test heartworm positive. It’s a bit surprising because we thought these dogs were confined inside.
Still , and especially in a southern state, all it takes is for a heartworm-infected mosquito to bite a dog who is not on heartworm preventive.
PEE WEE will be heartworm tested again to be sure. All our heartworm positive dogs are retested before the protocol begins.
However, in the meantime, we will be looking for a Foster-to-Adopt Home for PEE WEE while he undergoes heartworm pretreatment & the injections of immiticide to rid this teeny fellow of potentially deadly heartworm.
