How could it be that a starved dog rescued from an existence at the end of a chain could still have such a wonderful disposition?
Taps is such a mystery; or better yet, a testament to the devotion of dogs to people, no matter how much they have suffered at the hands of men (and women).
Taps, an 18 month old Hound mix with traces of field English Setter feathering, was one of 6 dogs chained in a West Virginia yard with minimal sustenance. The local authorities ignored warnings about the condition of the dogs. When the dogs’ owner went to jail for charges other than animal cruelty, the dogs were without food for 11 days even though a woman was still living in the house. Finally on Feb. 15th, volunteers from Pendleton Animal Welfare Shelter in WV were able to rescue the 6 dogs. Taps was 23 lbs. that day. As of early May, he weighs 38 lbs.
Taps loved playing with a 10 year old boy even when on his chain. Now at Last Hope on LI, he is a happy fellow who enjoys the company of other dogs, and is soaking up attention from our 200 Last Hope volunteers. He is looking forward to finding a warm, cozy, loving home of his own soon. Taps deserves to experience the best life can offer. Don’t you agree?
I've found my forever home! Thank you!
